About
Phoebe Chee has been hailed by SPOT as “one of Singapore’s most promising young sopranos.” She is praised for her “strong and consistent range” with “bursts of ferocity and vocal splendors.” In comedic roles, such as Despina and Susanna, Chee has been described as “sweet and sassy” with a masterful comedic timing, but can equally embody the emotional intensity of a tragic protagonist.
Highlights of recent seasons include Zerlina (Don Giovanni) and Pamina (The Magic Flute) with Livermore Valley Opera; Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) at Chautauqua Amphitheater; Despina (Così fan tutte) at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Lisa (La Sonnambula) with The Opera People in Singapore.
Chee continues to push vocal boundaries as she explores and masters early music through contemporary works. Concert appearances include Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem and Adams’ Grand Pianola. She has also been a guest singer for early music ensembles that promotes and performs Historically-Informed Performances (HIP) such as Cappella Martialis, Affect Ensemble, The San Francisco Society of Early music among others.
Beyond working on the classics, Chee is passionate in collaborating and working with composers of today. She is excited for her debut with Opera Paralléle, covering Henrietta Wong in Harvey Milk (June 2025). In 2024, Chee returned to the international stage making two world premieres in California and Singapore - At the Hawk’s Well, an adaptation of the play by W.B. Yeats and Beacon by Jonathan Shin. In 2018, she played Girl in Window Shopping with L’arietta, written by Singaporean composer, Dr Chen Zhang Yi, a work in which performers defined what Singaporean opera can and should be. As reviewed by The Straits Times: “Two decades ago, Singaporean opera seemed a distant dream. Today, it has become par for the course.”

In the last year, Chee has won numerous awards such as the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition as a San Francisco District winner, a Regional Encouragement Award, CS Music Vocal Competition and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Concerto Competition.

Chee is currently at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music doing her Masters in Music with César Ulloa. She is the recipient of the Dodson Family Scholarship.
